Douglas Macdonald was born into poverty in 1922 in Saigon, Vietnam. His father, a British rubber plantation manager, was absent for most of his childhood, and his Vietnamese mother struggled to provide for her growing family. Macdonald faced numerous challenges in his early life, including discrimination and prejudice due to his mixed heritage.

Education and Military Service

Despite the adversity he faced, Macdonald excelled in his studies and earned a scholarship to study medicine at the University of Saigon. However, his education was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Macdonald joined the French Army and served in the Allied forces against the Japanese occupation of Vietnam. He was later captured by the Japanese and held as a prisoner of war for two years.

Medical Career and Humanitarian Work

After the war, Macdonald completed his medical studies and became a practicing physician. He dedicated his life to providing medical care to the poor and marginalized in Vietnam. He established several clinics and hospitals, and worked tirelessly to improve the health and well-being of his community.

Social Activism and Community Service

Beyond his medical work, Macdonald was also a passionate advocate for social justice and human rights.
