Yeonmi Park, A North Korean Defector Who Escaped To South Korea In 2007. Every Falling Star: The True Story Of How I Survived And Escaped North Korea

Yeonmi Park was born in Hyesan, North Korea, in 1993. Her father was a high-ranking official in the North Korean government, and her family lived a relatively comfortable life. However, Yeonmi's life changed dramatically in 1994, when a famine struck North Korea. Her father lost his job, and the family was forced to sell their belongings to buy food.

As the famine worsened, Yeonmi and her family began to starve. Yeonmi's mother died of starvation in 1995, and her father died of a heart attack in 1997. Yeonmi and her older brother, Eunmi, were left to fend for themselves.

Yeonmi and Eunmi begged for food on the streets of Hyesan, but they were often turned away. They eventually resorted to stealing food from markets and restaurants. In 1998, Yeonmi and Eunmi were caught stealing food, and they were sentenced to three years in a labor camp.

The labor camp was a nightmare. Yeonmi and Eunmi were forced to work 12-hour days, and they were often beaten and tortured. Yeonmi's health deteriorated rapidly, and she was close to death when she was released in 2001.

After her release from the labor camp, Yeonmi and Eunmi decided to escape from North Korea. They knew that it would be a dangerous journey, but they were determined to find freedom.

Yeonmi and Eunmi crossed the border into China in 2002. They traveled through China for several months, hiding from the authorities and begging for food. In 2003, they were caught by the Chinese police and sent back to North Korea.

Yeonmi and Eunmi were imprisoned in a labor camp in North Korea for two years. They were tortured and beaten, and they were close to death when they were released in 2005.

After their release, Yeonmi and Eunmi escaped from North Korea again. They crossed the border into Mongolia in 2007, and they were eventually granted asylum in South Korea.

Yeonmi Park's story is a harrowing account of the horrors of life in North Korea. However, it is also a story of hope and resilience. Yeonmi's journey to freedom is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the darkest of circumstances.

Yeonmi Park's Activism

Since her escape from North Korea, Yeonmi Park has become a vocal advocate for human rights in North Korea. She has spoken out about the horrors of life in North Korea, and she has called for the international community to do more to help the North Korean people.

In 2014, Yeonmi Park published a memoir, In Order to Live. The book tells the story of her life in North Korea and her escape to freedom. In Order to Live has been translated into 20 languages, and it has sold over 1 million copies worldwide.

Yeonmi Park has also spoken out about the dangers of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. She has said that North Korea is a threat to the world, and she has called for the international community to take action to stop North Korea from developing nuclear weapons.

Yeonmi Park is a powerful voice for the North Korean people. She is a survivor of North Korea's horrors, and she is a tireless advocate for human rights in North Korea.
